Heather Meatherall

Computer Science Student and Women for STEM Award Recipient
Heather's STEM journey began with a spark of curiosity during a coding workshop in elementary school. "I participated in a 'Try Tech' day at my local high school, where I took a beginner coding class." "I really enjoyed how open-ended it was, and the variety of possibilities it offered.” After exploring coding in workshops and high school classes, she knew that studying computer science at university was her next step.
As a Women for STEM program participant, Heather feels coached and inspired. "The program has helped support me both financially and in terms of providing opportunities. It’s allowed me to make meaningful connections, both through the mentor program and with my fellow peers.” Workshops provided practical experience, especially a confidence-building session she found invaluable. "It was one of my favorites," she added.
Working closely with her mentor has reshaped Heather’s outlook on her future in tech. "Hearing about her journey has helped me realize that there’s a wide variety of paths I can take in my career, and I don’t have to stay in just one area. It’s also reminded me how many options there are in this field, the sky’s the limit."
Looking forward, Heather is excited to embrace new opportunities. "I'm looking forward to gaining new experiences and learning new things," she says. "I can’t wait to see what’s next for me in my journey."
Heather embodies the values of the Women in STEM program; “To a young girl or future woman in STEM: take the leap and try what excites you. The first step is often the hardest, but you’ll figure it out along the way.”
