Erin Hannah
Electrical Engineering Alum and Women for STEM Award Recipient
Erin Hannah’s passion for STEM started early. “I first noticed my interest in STEM in high school,” she said. “I really enjoyed math,it quickly became my favourite subject and still is to this day. Some of my other favourite classes were physics and calculus. I was always determined to solve problems from my homework and loved the feeling of finally solving a long equation or complicated problem.”
When it came time to choose a post-secondary path, she wasn’t set on a specific career, but she knew she wanted to stay in STEM. Ontario Tech’s Comprehensive Engineering program gave her the space to explore before she eventually chose electrical engineering,a decision driven by her love of math and fascination with theory.
As she continued her studies, Erin found the Women for STEM Program had a profound impact on her academic and professional path. “Without the Women for STEM Program, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” she said. “I’m extremely grateful for the financial support it provided and for the support and guidance from my mentor.”
Her mentor played a key role in encouraging her to pursue a co-op opportunity,an experience that led to a fulfilling eight-month placement at Elexicon Energy in the System Control Centre. “Had I not been connected with my mentor, I most likely wouldn’t have proceeded with co-op or gained any professional experience,” she said. “Now, I have experience that employers look for in new graduates, and I have an idea of the kind of job I want after graduation.”
Looking ahead, Erin is focused on professional growth and giving back. “After graduation, I’m most looking forward to gaining more experience, continuing my professional development and working to obtain my P.Eng,” she said. “I also want to keep encouraging young women to explore careers in STEM. Programs like this can make a huge difference.”
Her advice to others? “For young women interested in STEM, I encourage them to seek out programs like these and use the supports available for women pursuing STEM in post-secondary.”
