Fiona and Brionna Joseph

Electrical Engineering Alum and Women for STEM Award Recipients

Sisters Brionna and Fiona Joseph found their path to STEM through a strong influence at home. “Our interest in STEM began at a young age, heavily influenced by our mother, who is an electrical engineer,” they said. “Her passion for the field introduced us early on to the world of power systems.”

For Fiona, that inspiration led to joining her high school’s STEAM program, where she said she was able to “enrich my mathematics and programming skills.”
Brionna had long been drawn to science and the curiosity that

The Women for STEM program has played a major role in shaping their university journey. “Being part of the Women for STEM program has made my educational experience even more fulfilling,” said Brionna. “I’ve had the opportunity to make new friends and connect with incredible people in the industry who have taught me valuable lessons and continue to inspire me.”

Fiona echoed that impact. “Being a part of the Women for STEM program allowed me to connect with other women pursuing a degree in STEM,” she said. “It also provided me with multiple professional development opportunities.”

Both sisters credit their mentors for making a lasting impact. “Through this program, we’ve had incredible mentors who helped us map out our goals, stay focused and reminded us to never settle for less than our full potential,” they said. Brionna added: “I especially want to thank my mentor for reminding me that it’s important to always strive for growth and never settle, because life will always bring better opportunities, and we should be ready to take them.”

The lessons they’ve learned have shaped both their time at Ontario Tech and how they see their futures. “Being able to connect with others in the Women for STEM program allowed me to better understand the power industry and see the impact that support programs can have on students,” Fiona said. “I hope to one day make my own impact on future generations.”

Brionna agreed. “I now see it as a chance to help make engineering a more inclusive and welcoming space for everyone,” she said.

Looking ahead, both are focused on purpose and growth. “When I graduate, I’m excited to deepen my understanding of power systems, work toward my P.Eng designation and contribute to meaningful projects in the industry,” said Brionna. Fiona added: “I’m looking forward to working in the power sector as a professional engineer.”

They also had words of encouragement for the next generation of women in STEM. “To any young girl with an interest in STEM, I would say believe in your potential, stay curious and never be afraid to ask questions or take up space. You belong here,” said Brionna. Fiona added: “My advice is to keep sticking to your passion, even when it feels difficult. It’s easy to feel out of place at first, but over time, you’ll connect with others who share your interests, and that sense of belonging makes all the difference. Don’t hesitate to reach out for support when you need it.”
