My area of research is wireless sensors and wireless communications and for that matter cell phones. And I use pi in my every day research when I need to optimize the interface between the phone and the embedded antennae and pi represents that magical quantity that allows me to maximize the distance of radiation of an antennae on a cell phone with maximum efficiency.
