Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

A commitment to corporate citizenship and community service has defined Purdue Pharma (Canada) throughout its 60-plus year history in Canada. Each year it contributes to a wide range of community organizations in Durham Region and right across the country.

The research-based pharmaceutical company has become a valued partner in education at the university. Its commitment to advancing innovation in the interest of public health and the patients they serve provides our students with hands-on experience in co-op placements and scholarships that reward academic excellence. It also sponsors the “Purdue Pharma Distinguished Lecture Series” where leading experts share their knowledge on topics such as vaccines and the rising costs of medications.

“Purdue Pharma (Canada) has proven to be a great partner and a good corporate citizen,” says Dr. Jean-Paul Desaulniers, Associate Professor, Faculty of Science. “Their generosity helps challenge our students and educate the wider community.”

Purdue Pharma (Canada) recognizes its responsibility to the community, including supporting the discovery of innovative medicines and quality education for the safe use of its products.  A collaborative research project led by Jean-Paul and Dr. Yuri Bolshan, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Science, hopes to deepen a fundamental understanding of ligand-opioid receptor interactions via the synthesis of novel chemical probes.

“It’s a challenging field, and the public doesn’t always understand the development process,” notes Jean-Paul. “We want to do our part to support our communities by exploring new innovations in pain treatment.”

This exciting collaboration could potentially lead to the development of novel analgesic products and improve the health of Canadians with chronic pain.

Purdue Pharma (Canada) knows that a future of new discoveries is possible when we encourage students to get excited about scientific and medical innovation. Thanks to its support, the possibilities are endless.
