Pi Day Infinitely Successful

Pi Day, Ontario Tech University’s annual Day of Giving, boasted great success in 2022, raising more than $156,000 for scholarships, bursaries and athletics. It also supported the Student Relief Fund, which provides assistance to students in many different ways.

The fifth-annual event took place on March 14, the date mathematicians, scientists and math lovers around the world celebrate the mathematical constant Pi (3.14). With its infinite number of digits, Pi represents the endless possibilities available to students at Ontario Tech.

Pi Day on campus is always a celebratory occasion. More than 400 mini pies donated by Algoma Orchards were handed out to students at Shawenjigewining Hall and the university’s downtown Oshawa campus location. The university also hosted an online Pi Day Speaker Series, where interested listeners worldwide enjoyed Ontario Tech experts’ talks on research topics such as ergonomics, a net-zero world, and Truth and Reconciliation.

The day’s success was also made possible by Kemp Travel Group, an ongoing Pi Day supporter, and affinity partner Johnson Insurance, which matched all gifts made by faculty, staff, alumni and students.

“Initiatives like Pi Day are what give us, as Ontario Tech students, the hope that we will be able to reach our full potential,” says Amrutha Elanko, Health Sciences, class of 2022. “These donations allow us the opportunity to put our skills into action and show the world our talents.”
